Stainless Steel Sculpture
Stainless Steel Sculpture is one of the most highly demanded products now-a-days. The very first thing that clicks our mind by the word stainless steel is the cutlery. Stainless Steel is one of the revolutionary products that emerged out from the kitchen to display area in the form of beautiful art pieces. The extra ordinary corrosion and resistance has made this metal as a powerful usable product in the domain of art and sculpture. The longer life cycle and easy clean option has made the material more convenient for use in sculpture making. The natural shine of stainless steel makes it more adaptive metal for sculpture making. Modern architecture and niche designs have been highly influenced by Stainless Steel. Some of the most iconic monuments and sculptures have been made up of stainless steel which is erected at several places around the world. In India you can find few stainless steel sculptures at several public places. Now-a-days even at corporate places, shopping malls and in hotels you can find some of stainless steel sculpture as a part of interior.
History of Stainless Steel
Looking back to the innovation stainless steel, the story goes in this way: During 1800s scientist and metallurgists were searching for new materials that can endure long traditional steel as that was susceptible to elements. In early 1820s a combination of chromium and iron was invented which was a better version of steel that can withstand all sorts of corrosion. But still due to the issue of brittleness it was unable to be used for commercial purpose. In 1872 scientists developed a metal combination which was further considered as stainless steel. Finally in 1912 Harry Brearley belonging to Brown-Firth in Sheffield, England discovered stainless steel that was adopted as stainless steel alloy for industry. First as an outdoor decoration stainless steel was found in the entry canopy ofthe Savoy Hotel in London. Initially Stainless Steel replaced bronze as a trendier option for outdoor panels, sculptures and fixtures. During 1930 and 1940 there was an explosion of artwork and stainless steel was the material of choice. One of the most famous stainless steel sculptures is the Chrysler Building in New York City. The non-rusting steel was mainly used for building exteriors. The Chrysler Building was made from Nirosta steel (non-rustic steel). This Nirosta steel was composed of 8 % nickel and 18 % chromium. This non-rustic steel was used for window frames, exterior ornaments and crown. The bright and silvery appearance of steel gave the grand effect and with time it became a grand statement and aesthetically it became the symbol of modern architecture.
Famous Monuments Featuring Stainless Steel
After the popularity of famous Chrysler Building, many other famous monuments were erected wit stainless steel. Stainless steel became the choicest material for outdoor exterior decoration. The corrosion resistance and durability of stainless steel has become a big hit with time. Some more famous monuments are St. Louis Gateway Arch, 630 feet tall steel structure, which is the tallest human made monument in US. The United States Air Force Memorial in Northern Virginia erected in 2006, the Sibelius Monument in Helsinki of Finland, the 130-foot tall Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue in Ulanbataar, Mongolia and the Spire of Dublin in Ireland.
Well Renowned Sculptures made from stainless steel
In New York the famous sculptor Isamu Noguchi in the year 1940 created an Art Deco plaque of five journalists made up of stainless steel. The art piece was installed outside the Rockefeller Plaza. It’s the first huge stainless steel sculpture with measurements of 22 ft. height by 17 ft. width. The balloon dog sculptures of Jeff Koons, established in 90’s is quiet famous. In 2006, Chicago’s Cloud Gate sculpture was built. These sculptures are best known for its high reflective surface and mirror finish.
Types of Stainless Steel and their qualities
There are basically three grades of Stainless steel. Grade 316, this is considered as the best Stainless Steel which can be used for mirror finish work. This steel has no dent or scratch and is corrosion free. Stainless steel 316 is mostly used for high polished, high quality mirror finish sculpture work. This steel is best used for mega structural work till 100 feet and above. Next grade is 304- stainless steel; this grade is of medium range and produces high quality finish, but not like 316. The lowest quality of steel is 202, which is not at all recommended for sculpture making as it gets rusted soon and is not free from scratches and dents.
